I am a woman of mature years, a seasoned veteran of politics at the grassroots level, and a vocal leader of active demonstrations. I am a retired San Francisco public school teacher, and so I am a survivor of neglect and disrespect who has risen above all that. For the past decade, I have been an officer of the San Francisco Labor Council (SFLC) during a period when only two other women held posts as officers. I am longtime member of the JCRC Metropolitan Council where I represent the Jewish Labor Committee (JLC).
I was raised in a household where my father, an Orthodox Rabbi, taught me that there are 613 laws that Jews must obey. However, he said that in our family, there were 615. Number 614 was, "Though shalt not cross a picket line." Number 615 was, "Thou shalt always vote for Democrats and believe in the principles of the Democracy." I have not broken either of those laws, and I have maintained those beliefs ever since. My children are both Democrats, my husband is a Democrat, my triplet grandchildren will grow up to be Democrats, and my cat would be a Democrat if he could vote.
I am a vice president and the legislative director of the California Alliance for Retired Americans (CARA), an advocacy and educational organization that represents 950,000 retired union members and retired members of community groups. We train seniors to lobby and speak at forums on healthcare, senior services, social security, medi-care, long term care, pensions and retirement. CARA supports/opposes legislation dealing with topics of importance to seniors, disabled, families and children, and working people. I am the Vice President of Senior Action Network (SAN) a San Francisco organization that does similar work locally.
I have, in the past, and will continue to mentor young women and people of color who want to become active in politics and seek public office. I fought for childbearing and childcare leave for educators and city workers. I teach advocacy classes for seniors, young adults, and union members of all age groups.
I am running for the DCCC because I want to energize The Democratic Party in San Francisco. If re-elected, I will continue to expand Democratic voter registration. I will continue to endorse and elect qualified and dynamic Democratic candidates for all local and state offices. I will continue to vote to make sure that the San Francisco Democratic Party supports issues, legislation, and initiatives that are in keeping with San Francisco values. I will work to raise money for the Democratic Party so that the SFDCCC can accomplish these goals.
